GRAINS / DESERTS is a project by violinist and composer Johannes Haase and video artist Nicolás Rupcich. Their audiovisual duo combines image and sound in an ongoing dialogue, creating a composition as a system. Grains of sound, pixels, vast expanses, camera movements across desert landscapes: structures are dissolved, giving rise to new, dense atmospheres. Solitude and barrenness, emptiness and silence serve as starting points for musical and visual transformations. As each moment is re-explored, new patterns emerge; images, violin, synthesiser and electronics undergo a constant reinterpretation. Through micro- and macro-structures, they make the slow transformations of these very landscapes visible and explore the multi-layered relationships between climate, material and human presence.
