Laurie Simmons: The Music of Regret Film presentation

29. October 2008, 19:00

Film presentation

For 30 years, the American artist Laurie Simmons has been photographing dolls, puppets and anthropomorphized objects, some of which she arranges in interiors or drapes in front of carefully lit backdrops. Her Walking Objects series (1989-1991), for example, shows various objects, such as a firearm, a birthday cake, a house or a book, which move around on small dolls’ legs.
In her film The Music of Regret (2006), the protagonists of the photographs reappear and are brought to life for the first time. In this three-act musical, actress Meryl Streep, who acts as the artist’s alter ego, and an ensemble of ventriloquist’s dummies humorously regret mistakes or missed opportunities in their lives. Laurie Simmons was born in Long Island, New York in 1949 and lives and works in New York.
