In 2021, at the initiative of a woman from Oldenburg, a project group was formed within the Oldenburg Prevention Council to launch the “Women’s Mural” under the Wechloy highway overpass. It was completed in the fall of 2023. The project was inspired by the “Oldenburg” mural on the opposite side, which depicts only men. The “Women’s Mural” aims to show that there are also women in Oldenburg’s history who deserve to be remembered. One of the ten portraits depicted Edith Ruß, which led the mural to spark a debate about Edith Ruß. The project group subsequently examined Edith Ruß’s life more closely and ultimately decided to remove the portrait. Three members of the project group will present the development of the mural this evening and discuss the selection of women for the portraits. Following this, questions regarding our culture of remembrance will be discussed.
