Edith Ruß appointed Ute Hermann, a lawyer from Hamburg who was also a confidante and close friend, to execute her will. Edith Ruß’s estate contains a large collection of letters between the two women. Ute Hermann likely knows more about Edith Ruß today than anyone else. For this special evening, she has agreed to speak with us, share her perspective on Edith Ruß, and answer questions about her.

Ute Hermann (*1956) studied law in Hamburg. In 1982, she met Edith Ruß at a conference on women’s literature at the Evangelische Akademie Bad Segeberg. After an initial stint at the Hamburg Consumer Advice Center, she worked as a freelance attorney. From 1991 onward, she served as executive director of the Hamburg State Music Council and the State Committee for “Jugend musiziert.” Between 1993 and 2001, she served as the executor of Edith Ruß’s estate in collaboration with the City of Oldenburg. From 2007 to 2017, she was the managing and legal director of the Carl Orff Foundation in Dießen am Ammersee, and she practiced law until 2023.

Due to weather conditions, Ms. Hermann will join us live from Reutlingen.
