At the heart of this publication is Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn’s work When Water Embraces Empty Space. The work was created in 2024 for an exhibition at the Haus für Medienkunst in Oldenburg, in which the artist reconstructed the recounted and reimagined history of the famous Luf Boat using films, photographs and sculptures. The starting point for the project was an encounter with the descendants of the original boat builders, who were able to see the boat for the first time as part of the collaboration. A comprehensive essay by Ágnes Berecz situates the work within Nguyễn’s artistic practice, whilst a conversation with Bénédicte Savoy provides deeper insights into the colonial contexts.
